RKP is used as the standard on longboards because it offers sharper turning and a more responsive board, as well as a little higher ride height to prevent wheel bite from bigger wheels. The Kingpin faces the centre of the deck to prevent it from getting caught on coping when riding vert ramps. TKP is normally used on normal skateboards and smaller Cruising Boards between 18″ and 32″ like Penny boards because it offers stability and a shallower form factor to help with popping off the ground. ![]() Traditional Kingpin (TKP), Reverse Kingpin (RKP) or Double Kingpin (DKP). Kingpin trucks are the standard for Skateboards and they come in three styles. You can easily swap out bushings to completely change the feel of your board. If you’re looking for a more versatile setup where some days you might want to Surf skate and others you might just want to cruise around and push for some extra speed then having a double kingpin as your surf adapter is the way to go. Unfortunately, this trade-off comes at the cost of having a slightly less similar experience to real surfing. This allows for surf skates using a double kingpin as its front truck to stay more stable at higher speeds. However, unlike most surf adaptors, where the wheels are mounted on an arm, positioning the front wheels further back and swinging side to side to create the sensation of dragging the board across, as you turn on a wave, double Kingpins have their wheels positioned in a more normal setup when compared to other longboards. “Since we first started Evolve we’ve been trying to replicate that carve feeling you get when you ride a wave on a surfboard or that epic powder run on a snowboard” | Evolve Adjusting Evolve Trucks | The Double Kingpin Explainedĭo Double Kingpins Work as a Surf Adapter?ĭouble Kingpins are often used as surf adapters because they can be easily set up using soft bushings to create that fluid, high tilt feeling of carving on a surfboard. ![]() The popular Electric Longboard brand Evolve Skateboards has said that they’ve used a double Kingpin truck for 10 years now to emulate the feeling of carving on a surf or snowboard. They’re also popular for cruising at speed because with a combination of softer bushings on the road side and slightly harder on the board side you can create a 2 stage turning experience depending on how much force is on the board.ĭouble Kingpins are used quite commonly in the e-Skate market as well because of their extra ground clearance and extensive tunability, offering riders more options and customisation when dialling their board to fit their ride style. Many riders use them as a more stable surf adapter setting them up for a more divey feel, throwing them into turns. Opting for harder bushings in the back to keep stability and softer bushings in the front for front bias steering. ![]() To do this, Double Kingpin riders can use a selection of bushings to dial in their preferred turning circle and feel. Double Kingpin trucks are favoured by Longboarders who prefer cruising, because they can achieve a surf-like feel and a tight turning radius, without needing to sacrifice speed. The kingpin is fastened and tightened using a nut which compresses the bushings depending on how hard you want your board to turn.ĭouble Kingpin trucks use two kingpins stacked on top of each other to create a two-phase turning experience. ![]() The Kingpin is a single long bolt that comes up from the base plate passing through the hanger and a set of bushings. The hanger and base plate are joined using a Kingpin and bushings. They’re comprised of a base plate which mounts to the board and a hanger for mounting wheels too. Kingpin trucks are the most common trucks on a skateboard.
